Moved to LaGrange, Georgia about 1850. Disinherited by family for his southward move, but became a successful cotton planter. Received medical discharge for "deficient eyesight" while in the 4th Georgia Infantry. Later served in 2nd GA Cavalry and as Commissary Captain in Augusta. While in the Confederate Secret Service he led the robbery of the Franklin County Bank. Arrestd in suburbs of Montreal. Returned to Georgia after the war, recovering much of his former wealth. Active in politics, but he would not run for State Legislature because he refused to sign the Oath.
