Funeral Services for LaVerne M. Atherton, age 81 of Lincoln, formerly of Bloomfield, were held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 8, 2006 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Bloomfield. Reverend John Andrews officiated with burial in Bloomfield City Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Visitation was Friday, April 7, 2006 from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Brockhaus Funeral Home and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Bloomfield with a Wake Service at 7:30 P.M.
Mrs. Atherton died, Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at Haven Manor in Lincoln, NE.

LaVerne Marie Atherton was born in rural Madison, Nebraska, on March 29, 1925, to Robert and Bertha (Volk) Stork. She attended school there until the family moved to Plainview, Nebraska, where she graduated from high school in 1942. LaVerne married Eugene E. Atherton on June 22, 1946, in Plainview. They made their home in Bloomfield, Nebraska, and celebrated 54 years together before Eugenes death in 2001. Four children were born to them: Jeanine Marie (died in infancy), Jolene, Celeste and Dorrance.

LaVerne was employed as a bookkeeper, bank teller, and office manager at a local propane company. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church in Bloomfield, and also belonged to the Altar Society, Life Member of American Legion Auxiliary and Bloomfield Womans Club. Her favorite activities were bowling, playing cards (they belonged to several card clubs over the years), and golfing. She loved playing bridge. LaVerne was a 4-H leader for 12 years, a member of the County 4-H Council and a Cub Scout Leader. She and Gene hosted CCD classes in their home for a number of years.

LaVerne moved to Lincoln in 2003 and was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease shortly thereafter. She died after a short illness on April 4 in Lincoln at the age of 81. She is survived by her daughters and son, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law; Jolene & Bill Fujan of Lincoln, Celeste & David Rogers of Halsey, Dorrance & Patty Atherton of Lincoln; grandchildren: Andrew, Michael, Paul & Monica Fujan; Megan & Sarah Rogers; Kyle & Leah Atherton; sisters and brothers-in-law: Doris Ober of Norfolk, Darlene & Larry Bonge of Plainview, Bonnie & Dale Barth of Stanton, Milford Folkers of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert; sister Leora Fern; husband Eugene, daughter Jeanine Marie; and brothers/sisters-in-law Arthur Atherton, Tom & Elvine Clabaugh, Ed & Frances Polly, Marge Folkers and Clayton Ober. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimers Association, Bloomfield American Legion Auxiliary, Bloomfield Public Library, and St. Andrews Catholic Church or the familys choice.
