Arnold Grothaus, age 66, was killed along with William Genens, age 47, when they were blinded by the early morning sun and their their railroad hand car crashed headlong into a speeding passenger train. They had been headed to repair some rails. Both of the deceased were residents of Dyer. Arnold was born in Lundinghausen, Germany. He was survived by his wife, Theresa; four daughters, Mrs. Al Redar of Schererville, Mrs. Florence Davis of Highland, and Misses Rose and Frances of Dyer; six sons, Alphonse of Schererville, Ralph of Gary and Sylvester, Ludwig, Joseph and Howard of Dyer; three sisters, Mrs. George Schaefer of Hammond, Mrs. Kate Ahern and Miss Dora Grothaus of Chicago and a brother, Henry Grothaus of Whiting. Arnold held memberships in the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Maintenance of Way Mutual Relief Association. (Information from death notices in "The Hammond Times", 4 & 5 September 1940.)
