Hiram was a Presbyterian minister- first in 1846 in the Oakfield church at Genesee, then in Rochester in the 1850s when the family lived in Sweden, Monroe, NY. Hiram's work with the New York State Temperance Union is well documented. He was the State Temperance Agent and Commissioner to the General Assembly at Buffalo in 1851. About 1860 Hiram was appointed Exploring Missionary in Dayton, Ohio.

He married Mary Jane Hubbard about 1836. Their children: Harriett M "Hattie", Mary A, George E, Henrietta J "Etta", and Robert C.
