LEROY R LOFTON-"Pete": Keokuk; 71, serving his second term as Mayor-Keokuk, died very suddenly Friday in the home of his son & dau-in-law: Mr&MrsLeroy Lofton, where he had been making his home. He had been at his office in the municipal building as usual Fri & although his health had not been of the best in recent months, his death came as a shock to his many friends & the community. {paras re Mayor} Born 20 Jan 1892 in Keokuk, where he spent his life, A son of Edwin & Anna Hallback Lofton. In his early life he worked for Ewers McCarthy Clothing Store & IA State Insurance Co before joining his father in the insurance agency of EdS Lofton & Sons in 1925. He remained with the firm until 1 Jan 1959 when he retired to begin first term as Mayor. On 5 Nov 1913 he married HelenG Betts in Keokuk. Her death in Oct 1961 occurred only shortly before the death of their only dau: MrsShirley Kane of Hamilton in Jul 1962. He was a life member of Keokuk Elks, Eagles, Eagle Lodge-12 AF&AM, Zarapeth Consistory-Davenport, KaabaShrine & a member of the board of directors of the IA League of Municipalities. Surviving are 2 sons: Leroy & Ralph, 4 granddaus: MrsPatricia Laubersheimer-Minneapolis; MrsLinda Auchstetter-NrthAurora IL; MissDiane Lofton-Keokuk & MissLisa Kane-Hamilton; 4 gr grandchildren; a bro: EdSJr & 2 nephews. The funeral will be held Monday in DeJongs Funeral Home with burial in Oakland Cem.
