James Evans Powell's family moved to Morgan County Illinois from Smith County Tennessee when he was about two years old. They were in Pike County Illinois in 1834 where the family heard the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and were baptized about 1840.

They traveled with the saints in the James McGaw Eleventh Pioneer Company from Kanesville Iowa June 23, 1852. His Mother Mary Elizabeth Parker Powell died of cholera twenty-five days later. He married Elizabeth Jane Carter, who was traveling with her family in the John B. Walker Ox Team September 14, 1852 at Independence Rock Wyoming.

They settled in Provo Utah, where James Evans build a home and large building which housed the court at times. They were called to the Indian Mission at Harmony Utah along with his father in law and brother in law and families.

They moved to Monroe, Sevier County Utah and Beaver County Utah.
James Evans and his wife Elizabeth Jane settled in Rye Valley Oregon and remained there the rest of their lives.

James Evans and Elizabeth Jane Carter Powell were the parents of fourteen children.

Some have murdered in California.
