Aunt Mercedes was an Angel here on earth. She lovingly took care of my Grandma Fran, until the end.
Mercedes W Mulligan was born Feb 14, 1904, in Arizona. She was married to my uncle, Tom Mulligan.
Mercedes is the former Brawley Postmistress.
My memories of my dear Aunt Mercedes go way back, to when I was a small child. Mercedes was patient and kind. She was always a beautiful lady, weather dressed in an evening gown or when dressed in blue jeans and hiking boots, and climbing up the mountain side, with we little kids.
In the early years, Mercedes had been married to a doctor. They had a young son. At the age of 12, their son was killed in an auto accident. A few years later the doctor died also, leaving Mercedes a widow. Following WWII, she met and later married my Uncle Tom.
Tom was my dad's brother but also his life long close friend. Mercedes and Tom were very dear friends of my parents. Even though they lived several hours away, we spent a couple of weekends each month together. Either they came to our house or we went to their mountain cabin, or we visited them at their home in Brawley, which was nearby my Grandma Fran's nursing home.
Mercedes was very active in overseeing my Grandmother's nursing care. Mercedes treated Grandma Fran, like her own mother. Without complaint, Mercedes and Tom carried the bulk of the burdon, in looking after Grandma. Even while she was still working full time, Mercedes would visit with Grandma Fran several times a week.
Being the widow of a doctor, she was rather demanding of good care for Grandma. She stayed on top of the nursing care that Grandma received. If she felt that they weren't taking proper care of Grandma, Mercedes would get on them!
On her visits she would bring stationary and stamps, as Grandma wrote many long and loving letters to all of her family. When any birthdays were coming up, Mercedes would shop for cards so Grandma could send a card to each child. Before mailing a birthday card to the grand-children, Mercedes would tuck in a crisp one dollar bill. Given that Grandma Fran was bed ridden, I always wondered where she got those dollar bills, every year for my birthday. Come to find out, many years later I learned that, it was Mercedes who provided the dollar bills, for the little children. Mercedes regularly mailed stacks of letters and cards for Grandma.
Mercedes would brush Grandma's hair. Mercedes would help her exercise and message the sore joints. Mercedes would rub cream into Grandma's dry skin. Mercedes would sing to Grandma and comfort her and tell her how much everyone loved her. She was always there for her mother-in-law, my Grandma Fran. She took care of Grandma Fran for many years. My loving Aunt Mercedes was truly an Angel in my mind's eye.
After she retired, Mercedes would tuck a sweet note in her husband Tom's lunch bag every day. She would leave a note now and again in his sock drawer, under his shaver, in his jacket pocket or on his work bench. Even when she was very ill, she still left love notes for Tom. After she became ill, Tom began saving her notes. After she was gone, Tom opened a large drawer and showed me the love notes that he had saved. Tom said that he would read her notes over and over again. He said that he cherished her love notes and letters and that he felt Mercedes' love when reading the notes she left behind.
Mercedes' heart had been failing for some time. She passed away May 3, 1972, at El Centro, California. Her husband Tom, was by her side.
Mercedes was much loved and is dearly missed. We are looking forward to seeing you again, on the other side.
