Harley Lucas, Westminster, a suburb of Denver, Colo., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Presbyterian Hospital, Denver, following an operation for brain tumor a week prior. He was 64.
He is survived by his wife,; Lelia, a son, Keith, USNR, St. Albens, Long Island, N.Y., a daughter, Mrs. Anton Gunn, Westminster, and three grandchildren. Two sons, Deane and Dale, preceded Mr. Lucas in death years ago. Two sisters also survive: Mrs. Edward M. McClellan, Denver, and Mrs. Nettie Baird, Denver. Mrs. Edward W. Nelville, Denver, and Mrs. Marguerite Addis, Huron, are nieces and Herbert C. McClellan, Kotzebue, Alaska, is a nephew. Many cousins and one aged aunt, Mrs. Flora Slayton, survive in Elmwood, Ill.
Mr. Lucas was born in Onawa, Ia., March 22, 1883, the son of Mary Ellen and James Grant Lucas who recently died in Denver at the ages of 93 and 97. The family is of ancient Scotch origin, descended from David, King of Scotland. Sir Walter Scott was a relative. The family came to America soon after the Mayflower.
When Mr. Lucas was six months old his family returned from Iowa to Peoria, Ill., to live on the Lucas homestead that had been in the family for four generations. There Mr. Lucas attended schools in Brimfield and Peoria. In his adult life he owned farm and dairying interests in Huron and Wadena, Minn. He moved to Denver four years ago and was connected with the Dunton Realty Company since that time. Funeral services were held at the Howard Mortuary Friday at 12:30 and interment was in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver.
