he was in love at first site with Ernestine Davey. She was engaged to another young man when they met at a party. One of the ladies asked Esty how a handsome young man like himself was not already attached, he replied "I've not met the one I was to marry until now" and as he is looking right at Ernestine he continues " and if she will not have me, I'll not marry at all." It was not long till Esty and Ernestine were married on Nov 26, 1914.
When Ernestine and Esty decided to get
married, John S. Davey, Ernestine's uncle stepped in and gave
Ernestine away. He also paid for the wedding and all the food
provided. He was very good to his brother's family, both before and
after Edward's death.

Esty and Ernestine moved to the plains of NE to teach school, it was hard on the plains, the winters were extremely cold. They were glad to move when the opportunity came. But when they first moved there they were surrounded by German speaking people. Esty did not let on that he understood everything they said, he coming from German stock himself. There were many things said that when they found out had been understood, they were quite embarrassed and were not happy with Esty.
