OBITUARY :
JOHN A. "JACK" ABBOTT, 61, of 50 Reservoir Ave., died at 2:55 p.m. Saturday in the Hershey Medical Center. He had been in failing health for a number of years and was admitted to the Waynesboro Hospital after becoming
critically ill Friday. Abbott was transferred to the medical center for surgery Saturday morning.

He was born in Cumberland, Md., April 18, 1917, a son of the late John A. and Martha (Kelly) Abbott. He lived his early life in Cumberland.

He received a degree in civil engineering from Duke University with the Class of 1939 and was a registered professional engineer.

Abbott served with the U.S Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he was named to the position of Hagerstown city engineer. He worked in that capacity until 1954, when he was employed by the A. R. Warner and Son
Construction Co.

He purchased the company in 1957 and changed the name to Waynesboro Construction Co.

He operated the construction company until 1969, when the business was sold to Robert Brown. Since then, Abbott had been president of Abbro Realty Co. and Northaven Mobile Homes of Hagerstown. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Waynesboro Ice and Cold Storage Co., and at the time of his death was vice president of the company.

He and Mrs Abbott were married in September, 1936. They moved to Waynesboro in 1955 and had lived at the present residence for the past three years. The Abbotts had also been residents of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., for the past eight years.

Abbott was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the BPO Elks, Hagerstown Lodge No. 217, AF & AM, the Consistory and Ali Ghan Temple Shrine, both of Cumberland; Tall Cedars of Lebanon No. 95, Hagerstown, and the Waynesboro Country Club.

In addition to his wife, Mrs. Carolyn (Sharp) Abbott, he is survived by a son, John A. Abbott III, Hagerstown, a daughter, Miss Diane Abbott, Richmond, Va., a granddaughter, and a brother, Dr. James L. Abbott, Hagerstown.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Carl Buterbaugh. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Coronary Care Unit of the Waynesboro Hospital.
