daughter of David and Rachel Mayhill Brown. Shortly after her birth in OH, probably Hamilton Co., the family moved to Pilot Grove Twp, Hancock Co., IL. There the family adds two more children, Hannah Kate, and Grant. They are listed in the 1860 census there. By 1870 Ara is living with her mother and brother Grant with her stepfather Adam Kline. Sister Hannah is living with another family. Father David and brother Nick are no where to be found.

Ara's 1st husband is Thomas Shipman, they had two children: Zilla Catherine(Passmore) and Rose Etta
