Vernon was born, raised and lived his entire life in Moline, Illinois. He was a standout basketball player and high jumper for Moline High School in 1929 and 1930.
He married Shirley Grace Sweet on May 4, 1913 in Hudson, Wisconsin. They had one son, Gerald Vernon Swanson, born on December 30, 1934. Shirley died on June 29, 1935. Vernon married Mary Plovie on July 1, 1937. They had 3 children: Ronald Ernest Swanson (1/27/1938), Diane Flora (Swanson) Morel (7/18/1939), and (Mary) "Vernette" Swanson (7/4/1941).
He was employed as a U.S. Postal Letter Carrier for 16 years. He was of the Lutheran Faith and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Local Branch 318 of the Moline Eagles, and the "M" Men's Club.
Vernon died in a train-car collision at the age of 42. He is buried alongside his mother, father and brother.
