Thomas Marion, was listed as son of Samuel Gassaway on the 1850 census in Bandola District, Cobb County, Georgia. Record of the birth of Thomas Marion is extant in the county records at Ringgold, Catoosa County, Georgia.
Thomas and his father served in Company H, 16th Regiment, Georgia Volunteers. Thomas military record shows he was from Walker County, Georgia, and that he enlisted at Ringgold in Catoosa County. He also served a tour of duty in Company H of the 23rd Regiment of Georgia Volunteers.
Thomas's wife Amelia died about 1867 and he married her younger sister Mary, and moved his family from Georgia to Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas by Train in 1870, with other members of the Bird Family. On at least two different occasions Thomas made "runs" into the Oklahoma Territory to work several years at a time in the coal mines near Sallisaw and McAlister.
Following his death, which may have occurred in Oklahoma, his widow Mary was moved by her brother John Bird to Petit Jean Mountain near Morrilton, Arkansas. The names of the children of Thomas Marion Gassaway and their respective dates of birth and death were contributed by Nina (Deeter) Ellis.
Members of this family traditionally used the spelling Gasaway for their surname.
(Information from the Book "Genalogical History of the Gassaway Family by William and Anna Rutherford)

Listed on the United States Federal Census of 1850 living in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, as Thomas M. Gassway, at age 9
1870, living in Georgia, as Thomas M. Gasoway, with wife Mary and children, he is at age 29.

Story told to me: while Thomas and his family were living in the McAlester, Oklahoma area, one day he was challenged by a group of men to pick up a barrel of Molasses, and he did. It snap his strength and he passed away not long after.

*"United States Federal Census of 1900 for
Cedar Falls, Conway County, Arkansas we find Mary Gasaway age 55 listed as Widow living with son, Walter at age 18.
Research also listed a date of Death as June 25, 1902. Not sure why the two different dates unless another recorded it wrong."*
