She was your daughter, your sister, your cousin.

She was your teammate, your dance partner, the girl who sat beside you at church.

She was your buddy, your BFF, your homegirl.

Lauren Kittles was an inspiration to many, a 15-year-old beacon of light for local residents young and old. While she is no longer in this place, her memory will live on in those who fight on, those who seek a cure for cancer, those who will forever hold her close to their hearts.

Lauren Angela Kittles died Sunday at her home after battling Ewing's Sarcoma cancer for more than a year. She was less than two weeks shy of her 16th birthday.

She was the daughter of Greenwood's Dale and Susan Kittles and sister to older brothers Chase Kittles and Caleb Rogers.

Kittles waged a very public fight with Ewing's Sarcoma, which is a rare form of bone cancer. At one point earlier this year, the teenager thought she had defeated the disease, as she was diagnosed cancer-free.

However, the cancer later returned, generally a grim sign when dealing with Ewing's Sarcoma.

On Tuesday, Dale Kittles, who is a veteran deputy with the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office, shared some thoughts about his beloved daughter.

"Lauren loved everybody," Dale said. "She was the type of person who didn't like drama. I've had more than one person come to me and say, if Lauren heard drama was going on, she would go the other way or she would try to deter it. She loved everyone.

"She was a caring, loving person. And religious. God was a big part of her life. She was very active in the church. She was just a special person."

Lauren Angela Kittles, 15, of 106 Melanie Court, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at her home. Born in Greenwood, she was the daughter of Dale and Susan Kinney Kittles. Lauren was a 10th grade student at Greenwood High School, where she was a member of the JV Softball Team and was an honorary member of the 2010 Post 20 Baseball Team. She was a member of the Greenwood Community Church of the Nazarene and the Salt Shakers. During the past two years, Lauren dedicated her life to make other children with cancer feel better by giving gifts and making cards. She raised money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation for cancer research and helped raise awareness for abortions and the need for blood and platelet donors. Before being struck with cancer two years ago, Lauren was active in YMCA Flipster Gymnastics, cheerleading, softball and dance. While in the 3rd grade, she was awarded 2nd place in South Carolina for a drawing for the state duck stamp. In her earlier years, she participated in plays at the Greenwood Community Theater and was a member of the puppet team and interpretive dance team at her church. We are so proud of Lauren! She made us laugh so much even when she was in pain! We will forever love our little angel! Surviving are her parents of the home; her grandparents, Ray and Louise Kittles, Marshall and Harriet Kinney, all of Greenwood and her brothers, Chase Kittles of Greenville and Caleb Rogers of Greenwood.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Greenwood Community Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Matt Johnson, Pastor Robert Albert and the Rev. Scotty Moffitt officiating. Entombment will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Sean Williams, Jarvis Reeder, Blane Tarleton, Scott Russ, Mark Bratcher, Josh Hood, John Long and Keith Mallon. Honorary escort will be Tony Davis, Sonny Cox, Lonnie Smith, Ian Stoner, Zack Ouzts, Dr. Kevin McRedmond and Dr. Ronnie W. Neuberg. The family is at the home. It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials made to St. Baldrick's Foundation, 1333 S. Mayflower Avenue, Suite 400, Monrovia, CA 91016-5268 or by visiting www.stbaldricks.org.
