DEATH OF MRS. BLOQUELLE TAKES PIONEER RESIDENT.
Death Occurs at Home Which She Had Occupied Since 1850—Had Reached the Advanced
Age of 87 Years
Death claimed one of the oldest pioneers of the city Sunday when Mrs. Gesine
Bloquelle passed away at her home on South Ninth street in the residence she had
occupied for sixty six years, the residence at Ninth and Jay streets having been
the home of Mrs. Bloquelle since 1852. Decedent was 87 years of age and had been
a residence of the city since 1849, seventy years. Mrs. Bloquelle, nee Gesine
Schuette, was born in November 1831 at Delmenhort, near Bremen, Germany and with
her parents came to America in 1848 locating in this city in the early spring of
1849. She was married in 1852 to August Baensch who died in 1861. Six years
later she became the wife of Gustave Bloquelle who preceded her in death some
years ago. Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Bloquelle had enjoyed remarkably good
health up to recently but for some time past her health had failed and with
advancing age her condition had for the past two or three weeks foreshadowed the
end. Mrs. Bloquelle was the mother of Judge Emil Baensch, who is the only
surviving child. She was active in social affairs in earlier days and was a
woman whose charitable benefactions won her the love of many who benefited
through her kindness and whose quiet, unostentatious help to those whom she
befriended gave her the admiration of all who knew her. Mrs. Bloquelle was an
active member of the South Side Ladies Aid society and up to the time of her
death took an interest in the work of the organization of which she served as
president for ? and under her wise leadership the aid society rendered valuable
assistance to many families not only in supplying them with the necessaries of
life but by giving practical advice and comforting counsel. To procure the means
to carry on the good work she had inexhaustible ?, concerts, theatricals,
masquerades, suppers, balls and afternoon entertainments were arranged with
great success both financially and socially. After retiring from active work she
kept up her interest in the welfare of the society and up to her end served by
her inspiring advice, generous donations and actual work. We mourn her loss and
express our sympathy to her family.
