Mrs. Arminta S. Abbott, 85, member of a pioneer Lawrence county family, died at her home on Franklin Street. She had been ill for many months.
Mrs. Abbott, affectionately known to many people in this and other communities as "Mother Abbott", was born a few miles west of Louisa Jan. 28, 1856, a daughter of John H. and Sylisy Muncy Diamond, pioneer citizens of this county. She had resided in Louisa since 1873 and had been affiliated with the First Methodist church for 67 years, being a member of the first Ladies Aid organized here. She was not only active in church work over a long period but kept open house for circuit riders and ministers of the church through this section. Her father was one of the county's early school teachers and she ever maintained deep interest in educational affairs and current events.
Her husband, James A. Abbott, who died in 1918, served as postmaster in Louisa a number of years. He was also a preacher in the ME Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. C. J. Carey and Mrs. Josephine Rice, both of Louisa, and Mrs. Cora A. McGrath, of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Dr. C. Y. Abbott of Louisa, and Judge John H. Abbott, of Jenkins, Ky,; and the following grand-daughters and gradsons, Mrs. F. O. See, Louisa; Mrs. Mary Carothers, Dallas Tex; Miss Evelyn Abbott and James and David Abbott, of Jenkins, Ky.; Mrs. Howard Hayes, Beckley, WV; Mrs,Charles Riley and Robert Robinson, Washington D.C.
She was married to James A. Abbott August 16, 1874 in Lawrence County. His first marrage was to Sophia Hutchinson who died in 1873.
