OBITUARY: The Daily Oklahoman, May 1985

Floyd Eugene, age 53, was killed in an airplane crash on May 21, 1985 near Harrison, Arkansas. Born in Oklahoma City on October 26, 1931, his family moved to El Reno where he was graduated from El Reno High School in 1949. He attended the University of Oklahoma and was graduated from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California in 1971 with a degree in International Relations. He served in the U.S. Army, 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper from 1950-1953, receiving an honorable discharge. In 1955 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served his country for 20 years.

During his service he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, 13 Air Medals, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" and the Presidential Unit Citation. Following his retirement from the Navy he continued his flying with various corporations including Lammerts Oil Company and most recently Target Development, Branson, Missouri.

Not only was he a devoted aviator, but a distinguished artist. He was best known for his aviation art and his pastels of still life. Oil paintings of historical value hang in permanent collections of the Monterey Maritime Museum, Monterey, California and the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

He is survived by his four children, John, Julie, Jennifer, and Joseph. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his total devotion to God, his love for his country, and his tireless ministering to the needs of others. We will miss you greatly, Floyd Eugene Sykes. Memorial services will be Tuesday, May 28, 1985 at 2:00pm at Westminister Presbyterian Church.
