HARDIN, Mont. — Former Sheridan resident Jerry Belle Allen, 90, of Hardin died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Heritage Acres nursing home.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery with Kevin Jones officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Allen was born Nov. 26, 1910, near Hulett to Robert and Erma Tate. The family moved to Sheridan County when she was 15. They settled near Ranchester. She rode race horses for some of the prominent horse breeders in the Big Horn area during her high school years and became a trick rider. She was a graduate of Sheridan High School and took a year of normal training to become a teacher. She taught in a one-room country school near Beckton for five years. She married Howard Allen in 1935 in Sheridan. He worked at saddle shops and she made shirts and leather apparel, including the leather outfits worn by Sheridan rodeo queens. The family later moved to Otter Creek, Mont., and bought 12 acres near Ashland. They returned to Sheridan in 1983. Mr. Allen died in 1996, and she moved to Custer, Mont., then to Hardin. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Erma, and a sister, Naomi Penton. Survivors include a son, Harry; a brother, Bob; and four grandchildren.
