Jesse M. Hacker, 77, died at 8:20 a.m. today at his home in Lancaster Township following an illness of 21 years when he had his first stroke. He had been bedfast for five years. A lifelong resident of Lancaster Township, he had been a farmer. He was born 29 February 1884, to John P. and Clara Eckman Hacker. He married Bertha Bowman 29 August 1906. She died 2 June 1955. Surviving are two children, J. Edwin Hacker of Chino, California and Mrs. Carl (Helen) Shellenbarger, at home; two grandchildren, Arleen and Margaret Hacker, and two brothers, Roy E. and Mark H. Hacker, both of Lancaster Township. A sister, Mrs. Donald (Fern) Stroup, and a brother, William A., preceded in death. Hacker was a member of the Lancaster Wesleyan Methodist Church. Friends may call after 7 o'clock tonight at the Bailey Mortuary where services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Richard Abraham officiating, also, officiating were Rev. Thomas Wildey and Rev. Noel Finterholter. The Rev. and Mrs. Walter Rogers are the singers and Mrs. Mary Rowe will be the organist. Pallbearers are Neil, John A., James, and J. P. Hacker, Dale Ulrich, I. H. Wiley, Eldon Crull and Henry Lawver. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery. (Herald-Press, Huntington, Indiana, Thursday, 10 August 1961).
