Alvin R. Dornburg, 77, of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls.

He was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Pipestone, Minn., the son of Herbert and Lydia (Nordmeyer) Dornburg. On Sept. 13, 1953, he married Marlene Stine in Fergus Falls. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, including one year on the island of Enewtok. After his discharge from the service he moved to Grand Forks and worked on the air base where he became a carpenter. In 1960 the couple moved to Underwood where he went to work for Eian and Ness Construction. In 1965 he started his own construction company.

During the early 1990s he left construction and took a job with the Fergus Falls School District where he worked until his retirement in 2001. Al and Marlene then moved to the Sheridan House where they made their home until his death.

He was a volunteer fireman in Underwood for many years, served as the Underwood town constable, was a member of the American Legion, and was a volunteer at the Broen Home.

Alvin enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, dancing, restoring old tractors, and most recently rug making for the Broen Home Auxiliary. He was known as the "Rug Man."

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Dornburg of Fergus Falls; five children: Colleen Spittle of Elbow Lake, Curtis (Norma) Dornburg of Chatham, La., Cynthia (Larry) Drechsel of Las Vegas, Nev., Carolee (Alvin) Peterson of Battle Lake and Cheryl (Floyd) Larson of Dalton; 11 grandchildren: Jared and Nicole Spittle, Shane and Shelley Dornburg, Debra Phillips, Eli Drechsel, Joshua Peterson, Charity Hovland, Erika Larson, Aaron Larson and Anna Marie Malecha; and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Verlyn (LeAnn) of Underwood, and Harland (Diane) of Farmington, Minn.; and brothers-in-law, Gerald (LouAnn) Stine of Underwood, and Dale (Donna) Stine of Dalton.

Preceding him in death were his parents; Herbert in 1966 and Lydia in 2000; two brothers, Darwin in 1998 and Douglas Dornburg in 1978; a son-in-law, Sidney Spittle; and his mother and father-in-law, John and Sybil Stine.

Memorials are preferred to Lakeland Hospice or the Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Care and Research Center.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Light & Life Auditorium of the Broen Home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Light & Life Auditorium of the Broen Memorial Home, Fergus Falls
