— Imogene Austin Buckallew, 86, of Terre Haute, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006 at Terre Haute Union Hospital. Prior to her marriage, she had been employed at American Can and the ammunition plant. She was a homemaker.
She was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Vigo County to Andrew Marion and Clovie Belle (Bays) Austin. She married James R. Buckallew Sr., the heart of her heart on Oct. 16, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1991.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda J. Buckallew; a granddaughter Jennifer Elizabeth; and grandsons James ?Matthew? and Scott Daniel Buckallew; and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Nicole Buckallew, all of Terre Haute; one brother James R. Austin of Farmersburg; and brothers-in-law, Paul Buckallew and wife Sara and Ralph E. Buckallew, of Indianapolis. One special niece, Janet Buckallew Rose of Terre Haute, assisted with her care. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Janice Wrightsman, Barbara Black, Elva Jo Buckallew Stocker, Karen Buckallew Loudermilk, Deb Szatkowski, Wesley T. Austin Jr., Ronald Austin, Calvin Austin, Michael D. Austin and Thomas D. Buckallew, all of Terre Haute, and Cathy Agresta, of Ft. Knox, Ky. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son,, James R. Buckallew Jr., on Jan. 8, 2000; a sister, Mary Austin Phillips and three brothers, William R. Austin, Andrew Frederick Austin, and Theodore Wesley Austin.
In addition to being a homemaker, she worked the polls at Hungarian Hall and was committed to getting everyone she came in contact with to vote. She was active in the Parent Teacher Association, she served as a Cub Scout den mother, and taught numerous Sunday school classes. She and her husband enjoyed C.B. radio clubs. She always had coffee, cookies or pie and a willing shoulder for whoever needed them. She loved animals and will be missed by her Jack Russell terrier, Jacky. She was a founding member of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Terre Haute and had attended Victory Christian until physical limitations made her a shut-in.
Cremation is scheduled with a burial in Durham Cemetery. There will be no services or visitation. An open house and memorial will be at the residence at a later date. Memorial gifts can be made to either the North Branch of the Vigo County Library or the Terre Haute Humane Society in her memory. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory is assisting with these arrangements.
