James Joseph "Joe" Fipps, youngest of four surviving children of Moses Fipps and Anna "Annie" Ellis, b. Oct. 9, 1863 at Booneville, AR. He d. Apr. 30, 1926 at Enterprise, OK.

At an unknown date and place prior the 1890, Joe m. Mary Cyntha Busby, dau. of Silas Busby and Mahala Jane Chapman, b. Nov. 28, 1869 at or near Buffalo Twp. in Dallas County, Missouri. She d. May 5, 1930 at Enterprise, OK.

Joe and Mary Cyntha first appear in the June 29, 1900 enumeration of the non-Indian population of Achille (A-kill-ee) in the southwest portion of the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, some 10 miles northeast of Denison, TX.

In the 1900 and 1910 censuses Joe and his family were enumerated by the surname of Fipps. Prior to the 1920 census Joe had become convinced by one of his children's school teachers that the surname Fipps sounded "too English." This caused Joe to adopt the surname of Phipps. However, none of his older siblings were similarly convinced and continued to be known by the surname of Fipps. Not until the mid-1900s did the adult and married children of Joe and Mary Cyntha, who were living near or frequently socialized with Fipps surnamed families, descendants of the brothers of Moses Fipps, realize that they were all direct kin of the same ancestral family.

Joe's 15 year older married brother John Fipps, the eldest surviving brother of the Fipps family, had a small farm at Enterprise in eastern Oklahoma. John, who was childless, died at Enterprise in 1915. John's wife Nancy is believed to have been blind from an early age, and died at Enterprise in 1918. Prior to Nancy's death, she gave John's farm to Joe and Mary Cyntha with Joe accordingly moving his family from Achille to Enterprise prior to January 1920. That brother John's small farm was given by Nancy to Joe versus to William Gibson Fipps, the next oldest surviving brother of the family, resulted in a complete schism between the two surviving brothers (Joe and William Gibson). The result was Joe had no further contact with brother William Gibson Fipps for the remainder of his life.

James Joseph "Joe" Fipps, subsequently surnamed Phipps, and wife Mary Cyntha Busby had the following eight known children, all b. at Achille at present-day Bryan County, Oklahoma:

• i. Mary Maude Fipps, b. circa 1890, d. circa 1892 and is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave at the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma's Achille Academy National Cemetery south of Achille, OK.

Sept. 5, 1898 at the Town of Okemah in the Creek Indian Territory, now Okfuskee County, OK. Four children of the family. Nellie m. 2) in 1972 Otis Robinson and d. Mar. 24, 1993 at Chandler, OK.
