Richard was born to Robert Smejkal and Sylvia Kotek. He was adopted by his step father when he was a teenager and his name was legally changed to Jirsa. He married Eileen Theresa Kraft in 1947. He was a Army Air Force Veteran of WW II and a retired truck driver for Canada Dry. He was the father of one son and one daughter. He died from complications after abdominal aneurysm surgery.
