BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Arthur D. "Bud" Phillips, age 86, of Black River Falls, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, in Family Heritage Care Center, Black River Falls.

Arthur Douglas Phillips was born on Oct. 9, 1923, to Ernest and Elsie (Van Vleet) Phillips in the town of Brockway, Jackson County. He was raised in the Black River Falls area and graduated from Black River Falls High School.

Bud served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and later in the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War and served in the military for 32 years. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Bud and his brother, Richard "Dick" Phillips, owned and operated Phillips Painting for several years.

He was married to his first wife, Chong Sun Kim, in 1969, and they were divorced in 1987. He later married Clarice Markgraf on Jan. 21, 1989, at Rolling Hills of Sparta, Wis.

With the exception of the years he served in the military, Bud was a lifelong resident of the Black River Falls area.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, genealogy and trapping. He truly was an outdoorsman.

Survivors include his wife, Clarice of Black River Falls; a daughter, Susan (Tim Haskey) Phillips of La Crosse; a son, James (Areka) Phillips of Onalaska; two step-daughters, Cindy Jordan and Corina Zirk, both of Janesville, Wis.; four step-sons, Richard (Christine) Zirk of Pigeon Falls, Ron (Susan) Zirk and Robin (Lori) Zirk, both of Janesville, Wis., and Rian (Kathy) Zirk of Rockford, Ill.; three grandchildren, Brandon Phillips, Gabrielle Phillips and Joshua Phillips; 10 step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dean (Joanne) Phillips of Milwaukee; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Elsie Phillips; a brother, Richard Phillips; an infant brother, George Phillips; and a sister, Dorothy Rowland.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at the Buswell Funeral Home and burial, with military honors, was in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls. Pastor Linda Marlett officiated.

Family and friends were invited for visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Monday and on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at the Buswell Funeral Home.
