VIRGINIA BEACH - Alexander Bell passed away Oct. 22, 2005, after a seven-year battle with lung cancer. Born April 11, 1927, and raised in the Ghent section of Norfolk, he was the son of the late Alexander Herbert Bell and Elizabeth Jernigan Bell.

Alex was predeceased in death by his wife of 43 years, Jeanne Yates Bell, who passed away from Alzheimer's disease in 1997.

Alex is survived by his son, Alex H. Bell II and his wife Andrea of Virginia Beach; his daughter, Hunter Bell Pieklik and her husband William of Baltimore, Md.; and his grandchildren, Alexander Harkness Bell and Margaret Winslow Bell of Virginia Beach. Other surviving family members include his sister, Elizabeth Bell Robison and her husband Charles of Nashville, Tenn.; his nephew, Charles DePuy Robison III and his wife Katherine of Norfolk; his niece, Elizabeth Jernigan Robison of Richmond, Va.; and his nephew, Alexander Bell Robison and his wife Virginia of Nashville, Tenn.

Alex has a long family history in the Norfolk area. His grandfather, Norman Bell, was attached to General Robert E. Lee's headquarters staff as a clerk at the age of 19. It was Norman who penned Lee's "General Order No. 9" outlining the conditions of Gen. Lee's surrender to Gen. U.S. Grant at Appomatox on April 10, 1865. A Virginian-Pilot article dated May 21, 1951, recounted the details of this historic event. Quoting the article, "In later years, he (Norman Bell) often recalled to his children the tragic scenes of the surrender and the writing of the order." His father, Alexander Herbert Bell, was very well known in Norfolk and throughout Virginia. He was politically active as a "Byrd" democrat. His father was appointed collector of customs by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1942. In 1948, he was appointed by the City Council as city treasurer of Norfolk. He held this position until 1966 and he is still known to many people in the Norfolk area.

Alexander Bell attended Virginia Episcopal School until drafted into the Navy in May 1945. He completed his service in August 1946 and he then completed his primary education at Maury High School in 1947. He attended the University of North Carolina for two years. In 1955, Alex entered the insurance business which would become his career. He was part owner of Bell and Hayes Insurance Agency, which later became Alex Bell Insurance Agency until his retirement in 1997.

Alex was also involved in the Norfolk community in a number of ways. He was one of the founding members of the Mallory Country Club in the Ghent section of Norfolk. He was also a member of St. Paul's Church and Christ and St. Luke's Church. He was a past member of the Norfolk German Club, Norfolk Rotary Club, Virginia Beach Cruise Club, Great Bridge Cruise Club and Cedar Island Club. He also was a member and past commodore of the Norfolk Boat Club. He was an active member and past commander of American Legion Post 35 where his father had also been commander many years ago.

Alex wants to thank all friends and family for their support throughout his life. Dr. Thomas Alberico was also of great help and comfort to Alex in his final days. For those wishing to remember Alex's life, memorial donations may be made to Lee's Friends 618 Stockley Gardens, Norfolk, VA 23507 (757) 625-3115. This is a local organization which assists people living and coping with cancer. A memorial service in honor of Alex's life will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005. Following this service, friends are invited to visit with family and each other at the home of Alex and Andrea Bell. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
