MARGARET ELLEN BYRD
Funeral services were held at Skroch Funeral Chapel Friday, at 2 p.m., for Margaret Ellen Byrd, 87, who died at Phoenix, Ariz., after an illness of several years. The Rev. Peter Vanderveen officiated at the service.
Margaret Hutton, daughter of Annie and Jessie Hutton, was born in Black Hawk County, Iowa on March 17, 1897. [The correct year is 1891.] When she was nine years old, she moved to Egan with her parents. She received her education in the Egan public school. She was married to Ray Justus on Sept. 14, 1910 and they farmed northeast of Egan until his death in 1916 and she moved into Egan. She was married to James W. (Bill) Byrd in October, 1923. He worked in construction throughout South Dakota and they moved to Watertown in 1943. She moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1976, where she has since lived. She was a Gold Star Mother, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Ladies Cemetery Assn. Of Egan.
She is survived by two sons, Ralph and Ray Justus, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Gregg, Flandreau, and Mrs. Manda Chestnut, Oakdale, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; one son (during World War II), and one brother, Guy Hutton.
Pallbearers were Martin Tusia, William Stombaugh, Irving S[t]ombaugh, Cliff Reed, Virtus Schroeder and Mike Duncan.
Interment was in the Hillside Cemetery, Egan.
