Jacob was the youngest of 10 children of Johannes Hage and Catharina Frey. His grandfathers were Conrad Hage and John Frey. Jacob never married. His brother Benjamin and some of his descendants are are also buried in St. Lukes.

In 1850 and 1860 Jacob was living Chanceford, York County. Living in the household was Barbara Stermer, an housekeeper, who was born in about 1839 in Pennsylvania. Jacob was a farmer.
