William Hudson Gresham known as "Hudson" to his family and friends, was born 23 Jan 1884 in Columbus, Bartholomew, IN, and died 15 Aug 1956 in Lakewood, Jefferson, Colorado.
Hudson's parents were David Gresham (a Civil War veteran) and Alice (Rush) Gresham. Hudson had a half brother named George, from his father's 1st marriage. George Gresham was born in 1855 in Bartholomew County, IN. George's mother died when he was young.
Hudson had 2 sisters
Claudie (Gresham) Geitz 1878 - 1850
Lulu (Gresham) Dahn 1881 - 1933
Hudson' s mother died at the young age of 28, when Hudson was just 4 years old, Lulu was 6 1/2 and Claudie was 10. The children went on to live with their grandmother & Alice's sister Mary. At the age of about 7, Hudson's aunt got him a job working in the shirt factory, where she worked. There were no child labor laws back then.
As an adult, Hudson made his living working for an auto dealer, painting cars. In 1919, Hudson married Rose Luella (King) Gresham. In 1920, Hudson & Rose packed up her parents and moved from Peoria, Illinois, to Denver, Colorado. Hudson bought 2 side by side lots, on the corner, at the top of a hill. The family lived in tents on the lot, while Hudson built their home. Once the house was built, Hudson built an identical house, on the 2nd lot next door, for Rose's parents. Rose's parents lived out their days, in the house that Hudson built for them. Rose & Hudson lived in the house that he built, until just a few years before he passed away.
Hudson used his painting skills to gain employment with the Union Pacific Rail Road. The signs that were painted on the sides of the railway cars, were all hand painted back then. His auto painting skills came in handy during the depression. Hudson, along with many others, were laid off. To support his family, he took on auto painting jobs. Thankfully, the railroad re-hired their people a little sooner, than some other industries. Hudson gladly went back to work, painting railway cars.
Having grown up in a house full of women, Hudson loved to bake. Rose was the family cook, Hudson was the family baker. Every weekend he took over the kitchen to bake bread, and sometimes cake and pies. During the depression, after Hudson was called back to work, he made certain to also bake enough bread for each of their neighbors, who were still out of work. Daughter June, was revered for her great pie crust, a skill she learned from her dad.
During his 25 years with the Union Pacific RR, Hudson played the tuba, in their band. After his retirement, he traveled with their band, for performances far and wide.
Hudson & Rose's daughter June was born, October 24, 1923. Their last child was born in 1932. Hudson adored Rose, his children and grandchildren.
He has been gone over 50 years but we still miss him. He was a kind and gentle man. As his granddaughter, I clearly remember to this day, the joy it gave him, when I would read the Bible to him. His eyes had begun to fail. His last summer, I read to him every afternoon, before he took his nap. His favorite was Psalms 91 and Psalms 23.
Hudson lost his battle with cancer on Aug. 15, 1956. He passed away at home, with family by his side.
