Josephine Johnson was born near Newark, Nebraska to John E. and Eliza Larson Johnson. The family later moved to Loup Township, Buffalo County, Nebraska where Josephine attended Johnson School #113. She married John Swartz. Their children were Alvin Swartz and Bertha Swartz Dunning. When the children were quite young, John was killed while digging an open well. Josephine worked as a housekeeper for Charles Talbot and a cook at the Johnson Clinic and Allison Hotel in Kearney before moving to Denver. She later married Frank Birdsall. They are both buried in the Kearney Cemetery.
