William Groom was a son of John Groom (born 15 December 1820 in Kentucky and died 26 July 1846 in Clinton or Holt County, Missouri) and Mary Ellen 'Polly' Headrick. After the death of John Groom, Mary Ellen married John Ogle and the family moved to Oregon. Mary Ellen and John Ogle are buried at the Mulkey Cemetery in Eugene, Lane County.
Will married Harriet Jane Billings, a daughter of Byrd and Lydia Billings. They were married on 16 August 1860 in Nodaway County, Missouri.
