Enlisted, May 11, 1903, as a Trumpeter in Troop 1, Squadron A, NYNG, New York City, then transferred to Troop 4. Served in the ranks, and became the Squadron Sergeant Major, January 11, 1911. Commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, November 11, 1913, serving till, January 19, 1915.

As a member of Squadron A, he marched at the inauguration of President T. Roosevelt, March 3-6, 1905, Washington, DC.
November 14, 1908, the Squadron paraded at the unveiling of the Prison Ship Martyrs, Fort Green Park, Brooklyn, NY.
December 6, 1911, the Squadron was reviewed by Henry L. Stimson ( former member of Squadron A ), Secretary of War.
April 20, 1913, a review was held for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the mustering of Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry, Spanish American War. The reviewers officers were Major General Charles F. Roe and the veterans of Troop A.

His brother Joseph Ascher Smith also served in Squadron A ( 105th Machine Gun Battalion, WW 1 )
