Freda, the daughter of German immigrants, traveled west with her family by wagon via the Oregon Trail around 1891. The family lived in Roseburg, in Douglas County until about 1894, before heading southward into California, farming in Duncan Mills until about 1897. The family then move into the San Francisco area, where they remained.

She married first, Theodor Friedrich Wilhelm Schwenderlauf (1880-1942), a German immigrant, with whom she had three children, as follows:
- Alta Freda Schwenderlauf (1905-1905)
- Franklin "Frank" Theodore Schwenderlauf (1906-1971)
- Henry "Hank" William Schwenderlauf (1908-1975)

She married second, William Samuel "Bill" Burchard (1888-1959), a rancher from Monterey County, California. Freda and Bill had no children of their own together.

On 14 Mar 1927, after Freda's death from tuberculosis, Bill Burchard legally adopted Freda's two adult sons Frank & Hank, as his own. They both took the Burchard name from then on.

It is said of Freda that she was very well-liked by everyone who met her. In almost all photographs of her, she is captured with a smile. Although this lovely lady is gone, her smile remains.
