A son of Dr.John W. Jenks and Mary Barclay Jenks,who were of the 1st pioneer families to arrive in the area which would soon become known as,Punxsutawney.
Phineas W. Jenks was the 2nd son of this union.
He is also known in the local histories
as ,"The 1st white male child born in Punxsutawney."
He began his working life as a store clerk,then he worked at the Jenks Tannery,as a Tanner,for 13 years until it closed in the 1880s.
He was also briefly involved in the lumbering trade.
In his youthful years,he enjoyed reading the law,and at the age of 32,he was admitted to the bar to practice law.
He and other community minded men,worked hard to bring the railroad to Punxsutawney.

He was married in 1842 Mary A. Gray,who was a daughter of James Gray, of Westmoreland County,Pennsylvania.
She died in 1854.
These known children were born,
~ John G. Jenks survived her;
~ William B. Jenks;
~ Heath Jenks;
~ Sarah Elizabeth Jenks 1842 - 1847;
~ Laura Mary Jenks 1851 - 1853;
~ Julia Jenks 1853 - 1853
~ an Infant

In 1855, Phineas was married Mary E. Henneigh,who was a daughter of Daniel Henneigh.
This union produced 4 children,namely:
~ Josephine,who married Elmer Shaffer;
~ Leila,who married Everend Bierer,both of Punxsutawney;
~ two children who died young.
