"Civil War Veteran", Co. K, 136th NY Vol. Inf. Info. from Findagrave member, Cherie Officer and The Olean (NY) Evening Herald, Monday, Oct. 30, 1916 Page 6. Fred passed away at his home on Bishop St. in Olean at age 73. He was a member of the People's Methodist Episcopal Church of East Olean (It is gone now, but was located on Garden Ave., one block from Bishop St.), and of the Bayard Post No. 222, Grand Army of the Republic. He enlisted in the Civil War at Portage, NY., August 8, 1862 and served for three years under Capt. A.F. Davis in Co. K. He took part in the battles of Fredericksburg, VA., Chancellorsville, VA., and Gettysburg, PA and was honorably discharged on June 20, 1865 at Rochester, NY. At the time of his death he was susrvived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. J.C. Murray and one son, W.L. Merritt of Olean. The funeral was held at his home on Nov. 1, 1916.
