From the official records of Fort Buford: "May Hazen, infant daughter of Colonel (Brevet General) W. B. Hazen, Post Commander, 6th US Infantry Regiment, died at 5 am of cholera infection, 4 July 1872. There was no further celebration of the 4th. She was buried in the Post Cemetery at 6 pm, 4 July 1872." Her body was later disinterned, on 3 October 1873, and returned to the General's hometown.
