Ben was born in Maryville, Tennessee, the son of Samuel Houston Smith, a miller, and his wife Mary Rhea Smith. At age 30, he married 20-year-old Miss Minnie Bell Dockery of Knoxville, Tennessee, and went to live in the city. Ben worked as a furniture collector. The couple eight children: Roy Kennie, Lettie Marie, Carl Houston, Inez, Vernon Luther, Louise May, Helen Geraldine and Earl Harry. Ben died of pneumonia at the age of 52.
