Kate was first married to Bion H. Darling and they lived in St. Johns, OR
They had two sons George and Pearl, and a daughter named Lilith. When Lilith was about 15 years of age, she became very ill with what the doctors called spinal meningitis, and in a few days she died. Kate's husband Bion who was working in a wood mill in St. Johns, was caught in some of the machinery and was killed instantly. A few years after this tragedy, George, the oldest son, was killed by a bull. Kate later married Fredrick H. Sturgill.
