John H. Dykes, 86, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2010. John is a descended of pioneer settlers from Hawkins County, TN around Longs Bend. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Seekers Sunday School Class. John was a member of Overton Masonic Lodge # 5 F&AM in Rogersville, TN for over 50 years. He was a life member of the VFW.


He was preceded in death by his parents, John Netherland Dykes and Nora Langford Dykes; brothers, Fredrick Carl Dykes and Calvin Dykes; sister, Mabel Dykes Johnson and his first wife, Beatrice Price Dykes.


John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ruby M. Dykes; daughter, Annette Beach and husband, Ron; two granddaughters, Whitney B. Pinkston and husband, Chris, of Rogersville, TN and Dr. Elizabeth Beach and husband, Dr. David McNelly of Chapel Hill, NC; two sisters, Janelle Dykes Beal, of Rogersville, TN and Virginia Dykes Gipson, of Elizabethton, TN; three nephews in Chattanooga, TN, Gary Beal and wife, Brenda, James Burton Mullenix Jr. and Walter Bruce Mullenix; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews of Hawkins County, TN.


The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today and 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel.


Services for John will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel with Chaplain Fern White officiating.


Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.


Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, P.O. Box 19269, Chattanooga, TN 37416.


Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, Hixson, TN.
