John was a physician specializing in cardiology in Santa Monica, CA and Beverly Hills, CA.

It was during his role on the set of the original Our Gang series of short subject films during the early 1920's that he received his stage name of Jack - well before the series later became known as The Little Rascals starring Alfalfa, Spanky, Butch, Darla, Buckwheat, Porky, and many other unforgetable stage kids.

John's sister was Mildred Davis who was married to Harold Lloyd Sr., an associate of Hal Roach, the producer of Our Gang.

It was Harold who groomed John for his part in Our Gang to be the neighborhood bully. In the 1923 Our Gang film "Derby Day" one of the title screens reads:

"Jack -- some neighbors say he'll be hanged when he grows up -- others hope it will be sooner."

He was also known in the series as "Toughy"

Here he is pictured (left) next to Richard "Mickey" Daniels. (right) in their roles in the 1923 Our Gang short film, The Champeen in which they spar to win the hand of Mary Kornman (bottom), the leading little lady of the series at the time.

After ourgrowing his role in Our Gang, John went on to play many small roles in movies as well as parts in such television hits as The HoneyMooners in the mid 1950's, The Dick Van Dyke Show and McHale's Navy in the early 1960's, and I Dream Of Jeannie in the mid 1960's

During such time, he graduated from the USC School of Medicine in 1942 and served in the Navy during World War 2.

Just before he died of respiratory failure, he was a retired associate professor at the UCLA School of Medicine.

A memorial service was held for him on Saturday, November 14th 1992 at 1:00pm at the Gates, Kingsley, and Gates Funeral Directors home in Santa Monica, CA.
