Mary Prudence Flenniken, a daughter of John Osborne Flenniken and Mary [née Reid] Flenniken, was born near Sardis A.R.P. church in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on June 6th 1810. Her parent's families were charter members of this old congregation.

At the age of 21, Mary married Davis Erwin on December 7th 1831; with whom she had the following known children:
Alexander Osmond (1832-1888)
Mary Elizabeth (1833-1840)
Martha Jane (1835-1915)
Joanna Prudence (1837-1844)
Charles Warren (1838-1862)
James Harvey (1841-1862)
Samuel (1843-1907)
Rev. John Pressly (1845-1932)
William Taylor (1848-1878)
Mary Joanna (1850-)

Around 1840, Mary and Davis Erwin emigrated west to the area around Tipton County, Tennessee; where Davis farmed and they raise their children in the bounds of Salem A.R.P. church. Their son, John Pressly, would later become a minister in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian faith, much like Mary's brother, Rev. Warren Flenniken.

During the Civil War, Davis along with his older sons served in the Tennessee cavalry. Sons, Charles and James were killed in that conflict.

After the war, Mary and Davis continued to live in Tipton County and where active members within the community. Mary Prudence Flenniken Erwin departed this life at the age of 68 on the 14th day of August 1878. She was laid to rest near her children that preceded her in the churchyard cemetery at Salem A.R.P.
