Wilfred Christ Nickel was born on August 23, 1912, to Fred and Ada (Essig) Nickel in Germantown Township of Cottonwood County, Minnesota. He received his education in the country public schools.
On September 2, 1936, Wilfred was united in marriage to Mildred Senst at the parsonage in Springfield, Minnesota by Rev. H.F. Rieke.
He farmed all of his adult life in Cottonwood County until 1972, at which time he and Mildred moved into the village of Jeffers.
Wilfred was baptized at Red Rock United Methodist Church and was a lifelong member there. He shared his Christian living as a Sunday school teacher and leader and as a member of the various boards and offices in the church. He also enjoyed singing with the Men's chorus and the mixed quartet. He also served as an officer on the Jeffers Coop Oil Association. For 24 years he was the treasurer of the Amboy Township.
Wilfred and Mildred enjoyed fishing, gardening, and flowers. They were active members of the Senior Citizen's Center in Jeffers. They wintered in Arizona beginning in 1979. Having no children of their own, Wilfred and Mildred held very dearly to their hearts, their nephews, and their families...Harlen and Marilyn Fisk and Wayne and Audrey Fisk, and Mildred's sister and her husband, Hazel and Bernard Bradley.
Wilfred began having health problems in November of 1986, and in January of the following year, he underwent two brain surgeries. In May of 1995, he was a patient at the Worthington Regional Hospital. He began to lose his ability to take care of himself, even with the help of his loving wife. He then entered the Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom on May 23, 1995. On Thursday, February 8, 1996, he was taken to the Windom Area Hospital and it was there that he died late on Saturday afternoon, February 10, 1996, at the age of 83 years, five months, and 17 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a stepmother.
Wilfred is survived by his wife, Mildred of Jeffers; one brother, Kermit Nickel of Moorhead, Minnesota, and one uncle, Rueben Essig of Sanborn, Minnesota. He is also survived by other distant relatives and a host of friends.
