She was born on the Pine Hill Farm near Weston, Mo., to parents from Norway who settled on a farm in southeastern Buchanan County in 1847. Miss Nelson was one of nine children. In 1881, she was graduated from the Young Ladies' Institute, St Joseph -- more popularly known as 'Doctor Martin's School' -- and in the fall of that year became a teacher at the now defunct school for women. She taught in Dr. Martin's school for 11 years, and later taught in the school at New Market, Mo.
Miss Nelson traveled extensively, crossing the United States many times, visiting Europe twice, Mexico many times, Alaska once -- with a sister, Mrs. Pearl Leonard -- and once around the world. The Alaska trip with Mrs. Leonard was made while Miss Nelson was in her 80s.
The remarkable Miss Nelson remained extremely active until her last several years. She was especially interested in church work and was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.
