Fern was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Chariton, Iowa. Her parents were A. Fern Stephens Starr and Floyd Edwin Starr of Chariton, Iowa, where Floyd worked for the Burlington Railroad. She married Frank Robert ("Nick") Hinebaugh in Aurora, Illinois, Nov. 30, 1941, one week before Pearl Harbor was bombed.
Fern and Frank served as inner-city Salvation Army officers in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Oshkosh and elsewhere, before serving as pastors in Wisconsin for 25 years. Fern also worked in bank, clinic, and fire department administration before she and Frank moved to Trail West Village near Buena Vista in 1984, to care for her mother until 1994.
"Sis" was active in the PEO women's organization, and in ClearView Community Church.
Fern spoke with assurance of joining Jesus and deceased family members, including her parents and three of her younger brothers: "Ed," Chet, and Jack, who died on Iwo Jima in World War II. Fern is survived by her loving husband, Frank, and three children and spouses: Frank, Jr. (Sherry) Hinebaugh of Newark, Calif.; Sherry (Dave) Hall of Minneapolis, Minn; and Rich (Becky) Hinebaugh of Colorado Springs. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and brothers, Bill (Arizona), Tom (Minnesota), and Chuck (California).
Friends are invited to join the family for a memorial service at ClearView Community Church, Buena Vista, on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m.
