Nancy Ann Babbitt Denborn a longtime San Diego charity volunteer who served on the White House staff of two presidents while her husband was stationed in Washington, died of lung cancer Friday in her Allied Gardens home. She was 58.
In 1981 and 1983, Mrs Denbow was a coordinator of volunteers at the White House greeting office for President Ronald Reagan. Her duties included assigning fellow volunteers to send greeting and holiday cards to the public.
Mrs. Denbow resumed her White House affiliation in 1989 as a member of President George Bush's staff. An employee of the Agency Liaison Office, she was responsible for directing hardship cases to the appropriate federal agency.
Mrs.Denbow and her husband, retired Navy Capt. Kenneth Denbow, first came to San Diego in 1954. They bought a home in Allied Gardens in 1970, living there off and on between various Navy assignments before settling permanently in 1989.
During Capt. Denbow's 35-year Navy career, Mrs. Denbow visited five continents. While living in San Diego, she coordinated fund-raising events for Navy Relief and was active in the Officers' Wives Club. She also volunteered for Project Wildlife. A native of Lincoln, Neb.,Mrs.Denbow married Ken Denbow at a 16. She was in her 30's when she satisfied requirements for her high school diploma at Midway Adult School in San Diego.
In addition to her husband Kenneth she is survived by two sons, Mike, of Norfolk, Va. and Kenneth JR., of Rockville Md.; a daughter, Teri LaTulippe, of King George, Va.; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Barbara Mullen of Norfolk, Va., Virginia Cottier of Colleyville, Texas, and Patricia Babbitt of Denver, Colo.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, Va. Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 1 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
