Likely named for his maternal grandfather, George Russell, and his paternal grandfather, Lewis Newell.

George is enumerated in the 1880 household of his parents at Armenia Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. He is aged 6 years and born in Pennsylvania.

As a young man, George worked as a laborer and sharecropper for farmers residing in the Welsh Settlement, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania.

George married Lena Elizabeth "Libby" BERRY on 03 Jul 1898. In the first year of their marriage they resided in Charleston Twp., Tioga County, where son Lester was born.

By 1900, George had moved his family to Elmira, Chemung Co., New York where he worked as a bridge laborer. George worked in an Elmira metal foundry in the early 1900s. Circa 1905, George and his family moved from Elmira to Gillett, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. George worked as a laborer on the Pennsylvania Railroad; eventually, he became a railroad track foreman and he managed a work crew that maintained the tracks north and south of Gillett.

Family lore relates that George would walk home from work, put his lunch pail on the front porch steps, start up the car and drive to the Bulkhouse Hotel, in Elmira, to have a drink. At that time Bradford County was dry and Elmira was the closest place a man could go for a drink. Family lore relates that George had a few car accidents while trying to beat local trains across road crossings. One accident landed him in an Elmira hospital and wrecked his car.

George was a tough, hard-working railroad man and he had a rough disposition. The economic depression of the 1920s and 1930s challenged men to keep steady work and support their families.

In the late 1930s, after retiring from the railroad, George worked as a night watchman at the Hygeia Cold Storage Warehouse, in Elmira.

Wife Lena died in 1945, aged 63 years.

George died aged 74 years. His death certificate states the cause of death as cirrhosis of liver.
