Lloyd married Emma Louise Lonkey (Laungthier) 24 Nov. 1881 at Hayden Hill, Lassen Co., Calif.

Lloyd's mother, Sarah Graves Fosdick Ritchie Spires, was a member of the tragic Donner Party. Lloyd's father, Samuel Spires, came out to the Oregon Country in 1850 and settled a donation land claim near Salem, OR. In 1852, he went to the gold fields in California. He remained in Calif. until 1885 at which time he returned to Oregon, settling in Myrtle Point, Oregon with his son, Lloyd.

Lloyd remained with his father in California until he reached 16 years when he became employed by other farmers in the Napa and Sonoma counties. In 1880, at age 23, he worked in the gold mines for a year at which time he married. He and his father purchased land in California with capital they acquired in the mines. In 1884, Lloyd disposed of his property in California and came to Oregon, settling in Coos County. He purchased a preemption homestead of 320 acres of which only five acres had been cleared. He cleared an additional 20 acres and put the entire cleared acreage under cultivation.

Lloyd also engaged in raising stock. He lived on the farm until his death. The property is now owned by his two granddaughters and is recognized as a "Century Ranch".

Lloyd Spires was a county commissioner for Coos County and also served as a member of the Myrtle Point city council. Lloyd served as Myrtle Point school director. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
