Otto Engel, longtime Kenmare resident and former postmaster, passed away unexpectedly in the Twin Cities Friday afternoon. It was learned here that Mr. Engel and his wife were enroute to New York City, when he was stricken and he died in his car.

Mr. Engel was born in Lakefield, Minn., June 20, 1896, and as a youth moved to LaMoure, this state, where he graduated from the LaMoure State Agricultural High School in 1914. He served in World War I, and came to Kenmare as a traveling representative for the J.I. Case Co., in January 1923.

He subsequently was employed with other firms and in April 1926, opened a tire, accessory and radio shop, which he operated for a number of years.

He served as City Auditor from 1928-1930, and as Commander of American Legion in 1927 and again in 1943.

Mr. Engel was appointed Postmaster in Kenmare in March 1937, continuing in that position until his retirement in October 1965.

He was married to Gladys Poirier of Kenmare on Jan. 20, 1925, who succumbed Dec. 28, 1965. They were parents of two children, Mrs. Charles (Jean) Rohrer of Billings, Mont., and Dr. Dean Engel on the staff of the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. There are seven grandchildren.

He is also survived by a brother Richard, in Los Angeles, and by two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Biegert of Boise, Idaho and Mrs. Joseph Mandel of Port Hueneme, Calif.

The Engels resided at Billings, Mont., after his retirement as postmaster here.

He was subsequently married to the former Ruth Sievert and they have made their home at Aitkin, Minn.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church at Aitkin Monday with interment at Aitkin. Masonic graveside services were conducted.

He had been a Mason for 50 years, and was a past Master of Kenmare Lodge No. 70.
