Gerhard Ohmstede, 101 Year Old Redlander Dies

Death came yesterday to 101-year-old Gerhard Ohmstede of Redlands in Guide Rock, Nebraska, where he was spending the summer.

Mr. Ohmstede was taken to the hospital Thursday and died Friday afternoon. Although in frail health in recent months, he was sufficiently strong to make the annual trip to his former home in Nebraska as had been his custom since coming to Redlands to live in 1922. He and his daughter, Miss Minnie Ohmstede, 922 Washington street (sic), with whom he made his home, left June 23 by train. On June 18 he had celebrated his 101st birthday.

Born in Schweiburg, Germany, June 18, 1856, young Gerhard came to this country as a sheep tender for $12 a month in Guide Rock, then a settlement only eight years old. He later homesteaded there and in 1883 married Caroline Knehans. They came to California on a visit in 1917 and returned in 1922 to live.

Survivors are four sons, Gerhard Jr. and Chris of Guide Rock; Irvin of Power, Montana, and Eddie of Hartford, Mich.; and his daughter, Minnie. Another daughter, Amanda, died years ago. There are also numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Mrs. Donald Crane (Eloise Ohmstede) of San Bernardino, a granddaughter, and her three children.

Funeral services will be conducted in Guide Rock Tuesday. Interment in Guide Rock cemetery (sic) will follow.
