VIRGINIA BEACH - Mavis Ellen Abernathy, 85, of the 600 block of Green Valley Drive, died June 5, 2001, in a local skilled nursing facility.
Born in Wilmington, N.C., Mrs. Abernathy worked as a bank teller for many years and was retired as a bookkeeper for the Virginia Beach Public School System. She was a member of Community United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Zulekia Court No. 35 Auxiliary of the Khedive Temple and the Golden Wives Unit Auxiliary of the Legion of Honor. She was a graduate of the Wilmington Public School System and Wilmington Business College.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Hardaway S. ''Ab'' Abernathy; a brother, William Eason of Murphy, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews in Wilmington, N.C., Ocala, Fla., Syracuse, N.Y., and Charlotte, N.C.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Community United Methodist Church by Dr. G. Keith Almond. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Community
