Margaret Beavan Moralee Johns was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1835 to Michael Moralee from Northumberland, England and Sarah Beavan, also from Great Britain, probably Wales. Her family moved to SW Wisconsin where the rest of her siblings were born. She married William Johns in 1854 in Wisconsin and then traveled to California with William Johns' brother in 1855 to join her husband. She followed him all through the Gold Country, bearing 9 children of which only 4 survived to adulthood. They retired to Alameda, Alameda Co., California where she was active in the Methodist Church, the Temperence Movement and several charities.
